Very Late New Year’s Resolutions 2018

Revisiting New Year’s Resolutions 2017

  1. Work on illustrating The Poet and the Flea volumes 2 and 3. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to work on The Poet and the Flea volumes 2 and 3 in 2017 due to too many other projects. Hopefully, I will have some time to work on it soon!
  2. Work on illustrating The Plague and Doctor Caim. I’ve illustrated up to page 18 (out of 100) of The Plague and Doctor Caim. I hope to get back to this project soon too.
  3. Send queries to literary agents about The Plague and Doctor Caim. I sent query letters to over 100 literary agents, but did not have much luck. This year, I’m taking a few different approaches on getting my work published. Hopefully, something will work out!
  4. Work on wolf-related, opera-related, and/or Wild-West-related graphic novel scripts. I worked a bit on the script for the wolf-related graphic novel and hope to complete it soon.
  5. Work on more illustrations for Hello Blob. I ran a successful Kickstarter to self-publish/print a full-color book of Hello Blob illustrations! You can check it out here: kickstarter.com/projects/868711984/hello-blob.
  6. Exhibit at SPX 2017, DC Zinefest, and other alternative comic conventions. In 2017, I exhibited at SPX, DC Zinefest, and Bmore Into Comics.
  7. Continue to work on my Patreon account (patreon.com/gegallas). I’ve been very busy working on my Patreon account. I post something new to it almost every day. Right now, I have 10 patrons!
  8. Work on some more freelance illustration projects. I worked on a few freelance illustration projects in 2017. Some went better than others. I hope to work on more in 2018.
  9. Possibly put lots of work into a new illustration portfolio. I didn’t really make any illustrations specifically for a portfolio, but I worked a lot on my new webcomic pawnmysoul.tumblr.com.
  10. Continue practicing Japanese. I’m always watching Japanese movies and TV shows as well as listening to Japanese rock music. It helps me keep up my Japanese.

New Year’s Resolutions 2018

  1. Work on starting and expanding my new small business, Open Book Chocolates (OpenBookChocolates.com).
  2. Work on illustrating my new webcomic Pawn My Soul (pawnmysoul.tumblr.com).
  3. Work on expanding my short story The Ink Drinker into a novel.
  4. If I have time, work on illustrating The Plague and Doctor Caim and/or The Poet and the Flea volumes 2 and 3.
  5. Finish writing the script for wolf-related graphic novel.
  6. Exhibit at SPX 2018, DC Zinefest, and other alternative comic conventions.
  7. Continue to work on my Patreon account (patreon.com/gegallas).
  8. Continue practicing Japanese.

Update: May 2017

  1. New Webcomic: I’ve been writing a script for what I intend to be a new webcomic. It’s only in the beginning stages right now, but I hope to be able to say more about it soon.
  2. Freelance Projects
    • I’ve started working for a client who does webinars. He records his webinars in front of a green screen and downloads a virtual set. He has hired me to essentially dress the virtual set in Photoshop. It’s actually a pretty fun project!
    • This past week, I finished three illustrations for a recurring client and animated them as .GIFs. The concept for these illustrations was a bit challenging, but I’m happy with the overall result.
  3. The Ink Drinker: I’ve been working on and off to turn my short story The Ink Drinker into a novel. So far, I’ve written over 60 pages, which I think is a pretty good start.
  4. The Poet and the Flea
  5. The Plague and Doctor Caim: The script is complete for this new graphic novel project about a plague doctor. I have also finished illustrating the cover and the first 18 pages. I’m excited to keep working on this project!
  6. Hello Blob: I’ve begun posting full-color doodles of my strange, original character Hello Blob to my Patreon. To become my patron, please visit www.patreon.com/gegallas.
  7. Upcoming Conventions
    • July 23rd (11 a.m. – 5 p.m.): DC Zinefest in Washington D.C., dczinefest.wordpress.com.
    • September 17th – 18th (11 a.m. – 7 p.m., noon to 6 p.m.): SPX (Small Press Expo) in Bethesda, Maryland, spxpo.com.
  8. Part-Time Jobs
    • This August, I’ll have been working a full year as an art teacher for an after school program for elementary school students. I’ve been teaching drawing, painting, digital classes, keyboarding, and storytelling. Overall, it’s been a great experience so far.
    • I’ve been working about a month as graphic designer, social media manager, and assistant for TINI KIDS, a new children’s clothing brand. It’s a lot of fun and I’m excited to see the brand grow. 🙂

New Year’s Resolutions 2017

Revisiting New Year’s Resolutions 2016

I think I did a surprisingly good job this year………

  1. Send out Kickstarter rewards ASAP! I’ve more or less sent out all Kickstarter rewards for The Poet and the Flea (Volume 1). The only ones I haven’t sent out are to backers that never gave me their shipping address. I’ll have to try to contact those backers again.
  2. Work on illustrating The Poet and the Flea volumes 2 and 3. The script and thumbnail drafts for The Poet and the Flea volumes two and three are complete, so I feel like I’ve accomplished a good chunk this year. I haven’t started on final pages yet, but I’m hoping to do so in the near future. I’m also working on illustrating another graphic novel, The Plague and Doctor Caim as well as writing a few more graphic novel scripts.
  3. Get The Poet and the Flea (Vol. 1) into bookstores. The Poet and the Flea (Vol. 1) is now in Big Planet Comics in the DMV area and The William Blake Gallery in San Francisco. 🙂
  4. Work on wolf-related and/or opera-related graphic novel script. This year, I completed the script for The Plague and Doctor Caim, a 100-page graphic novel. I’m around halfway through writing the wolf-related graphic novel script. I’ve also been working on the opera-related graphic novel script, which is taking a lot of research and translation.
  5. Work on more illustrations for Hello Blob. I’ve been working on a somewhat big Hello Blob project only recently, a couple doodles every night.
  6. Work on Harajuku-related project. I’m putting this project on the back burner for now. This year, I also bought a bunch of blank Kokeshi dolls I’d like to paint as another (maybe Hello-Blob-related) project.
  7. Get back to work on graphic novel The First Reich. This project is definitely on the back burner for now.
  8. Exhibit at SPX 2016 and other alternative comic conventionsThis year, I exhibited at PIX (Pittsburgh Indie Comix Expo), Creator Con, DC Zinefest, SPX (Small Press Expo), and Richmond Zine Fest. I also did two art shows, ARTSHOW_15: Comix and Gallery 102: Series No. __. I’m looking forward to exhibiting at more conventions next year!
  9. Get a part-time job that has a creative component and is fun. The first 8 months of this year, I was a cake decorator — which was a somewhat creative job, but wasn’t that great. Now, I’m an after school art teacher, which is a million times more creative and fun!
  10. Possibly apply to some fellowships and/or programs. I did apply to a few different things this year, but to varying results. I think I was most successful with conventions and art shows.
  11. Continue practicing Japanese. I’m always trying to practice my Japanese. I didn’t practice as much as I wanted to, but it’s something I try to keep up.

New Year’s Resolutions 2017

Revisiting New Year’s Resolutions 2015

I think I’ve done a pretty good job on my resolutions this year:

  1. Finish illustrating volume one (first 94 pages) of The Poet and the Flea.
  2. Use Kickstarter as a way for everyone to preorder The Poet and the Flea volume one.
  3. Have The Poet and the Flea volume one printed at a local company. This resolution is currently in progress and will be complete in a few weeks.
  4. Hopefully get into a summer publishing program at either NYU or Columbia. I attended the New York University Summer Publishing Institute this summer.
  5. Next semester, take “Publication Design with InDesign” course at Montgomery College.
  6. Get back to work on graphic novel The First ReichI haven’t had a chance to work on this yet, but I’m scheduled to get in touch with writer Shannon Brady in January and will take it from there.
  7. Finally go into production for short film Death Is No Bad Friend. Unfortunately, this project is on the back burner for now.
  8. Exhibit at SPX 2015 (to debut The Poet and the Flea volume one). I exhibited at SPX (Small Press Expo) this year, but The Poet and the Flea (Vol. 1) wasn’t ready yet. I’m hoping to debut the final book next year.
  9. Launch Radiant Pessimist Press. The Poet and the Flea (Vol. 1) is Radiant Pessimist Press’s first book.
  10. Continue practicing Japanese.

New Year’s Resolutions 2016

  1. Send out Kickstarter rewards ASAP!
  2. Work on illustrating The Poet and the Flea volumes 2 and 3. The script for all three volumes is complete. I’m hoping to start creating thumbnail drafts in the next few weeks.
  3. Get The Poet and the Flea (Vol. 1) into bookstores.
  4. Work on wolf-related and/or opera-related graphic novel script.
  5. Work on more illustrations for Hello Blob.

  7. Get back to work on graphic novel The First Reich.

  9. Get a part-time job that has a creative component and is fun.
  10. Possibly apply to some fellowships and/or programs.

I know this is an overly ambitious list, so wish me luck! 🙂
